In the restaurant business, aesthetics and safety go hand in hand. When the floor in the dining room or kitchen begins to deteriorate or cracks appear in the tiles, it’s not only a matter of image but also a risk of sanitary and staff safety violations. In this case, Georesin specialists addressed the challenge of restoring the floor without interrupting operations.
Diagnostics: Why did the expanded clay “sag”?
The client complained of progressive cracks in the finish and noticeable subsidence of the monolithic slab. An inspection revealed a specific problem common to many commercial buildings:
- Backfill settlement:Expanded clay was used as a sub-layer beneath the slab. Over time, under the influence of operational loads and vibrations, the expanded clay granules compacted.
- Formation of “lenses”:As a result of the natural shrinkage of the expanded clay, air voids formed between it and the concrete slab. The slab lost its support and began to bend, causing it to crack.
- Unevenness:The subsidence was localized, creating dangerous differences in floor levels.
Technical solution: Combined injection method
To save the floor, a two-component geopolymer injection technology was chosen, allowing for quick, clean work with millimetre precision.
Stage I: Deep Stabilization
The purpose of this stage was to strengthen the backfill layer itself and the foundation soils. The loose backfill turns into a stable, non-deformable cushion.
Stage II: Floor Lifting
The second stage was aimed at restoring the geometry of the slab.filling voids, raising subsided areas of the slab.Restoring 100% contact between the slab and the base and leveling the floor.
Working with expanded clay foundations requires careful control of the injection pressure to prevent over-lifting. The use of geodetic monitoring in this project allowed the slab to be restored to perfect horizontal alignment without damaging the utility lines installed in the floor.
Benefits of implementation for the restaurant business
The 155 m2 project was implemented taking into account the specific requirements of the establishment:
- The work was carried out during off-peak hours or in parallel with kitchen operations.
- Absence of “wet” processes. No concrete, dust or construction debris.
- The use of laser levels made it possible to monitor the slab’s elevation in real time.
The final result
Thanks to the application of methodsDeep Stabilization And Floor Lifting:
- PThe load-bearing capacity of the floor slab has been fully restored.
- Stabilization of the base prevented the appearance of new cracks in the tiles and screed.
- The client avoided costly floor removal and, more importantly, did not lose profits due to restaurant downtime.
